The Humboldt Bay Rowing Association will host a free “Learn to Row” day on Saturday, June 7.
The public is invited to participate in this event that will introduce newcomers to the joys of rowing.
The event is open to adults and youth aged 12 and up, and participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
According to a press release announcing the event, “Whether you hope to join a team or want to better understand the rowing events in (the) summer’s Olympics, this ‘taste’ of rowing will give you an overview of the sport.”
The day will begin with a quick introduction to technique, before participants row on Humboldt Bay in an Olympic-style, eight-oared racing shell.
Organizers say space is very limited and pre-registration is required.
Each session will last approximately two hours, and organizers say that earlier morning slots have a better chance of calm water.
The Humboldt Bay Rowing Association boathouse is located at 1063 Waterfront Drive on the Eureka Waterfront near the Samoa Bridge. (Look for the mural of rowers by artist Ben Goulart on the building.)
Online registration opens this Saturday at www.hbra.org.
The Humboldt Bay Rowing Association will also host introductory training sessions throughout the summer months.
