The Eureka boys and Arcata girls showcased their depth in track and field this week, with victories for both teams at the second H-DNL meet of the spring in Del Norte on Wednesday.
The Loggers edged the host school in the team competition, scoring 178 points, just seven more than the Warriors.
In girls competition, the Tigers scored 161 points, which 20 points clear of the field, with Del Norte second.
This year’s Eureka team features a roster of 76 and that depth is paying off and should see the Loggers contend for next month’s league championships.
“The team has been doing fantastic,” head coach Melania Valdez said. “We’ve got a big young group that came out this year and at every meet there has been some significant PRs.”
That continued to be the case on Wednesday
Three boys won multiple events, including Eureka sophomore Xavier De la Rosa, who placed first in both the high jump and triple jump.
De la Rosa was one of eight winners to set a PR on their way to victory in the boys competition, winning the triple jump with a jump of 40’ 3”.
Fortuna speedster Kavi Bolden placed first in the boys 100 meters and also had a new PR, crossing the finish line in a time of 11.19 seconds, edging Eureka’s Isaiah Herbst for the victory by just half a seconds with Del Norte’s Landon Balent in third.
Bolden also teamed with Mako Limon, Jack Stacy and Lawrence Serigny to lead the Huskies to victory in the boys 4x100m relay for the second straight league meet.
Balent took the victory in the 200m and also had a PR, finishing in a time of 22.77 seconds, with Bolden a quarter second back in second place and Eureka’s Michael Leen in third.
Del Norte freshman Jayden Garcia-Levy was one of five Warriors to place first on the day in boys events, winning the 400m with a PR of 53.24 in just his second ever league meet, while his teammates Dylan Rodriguez (1600m), Roy Short (110m hurdles) and Sebastian Espinoza (discus) each also won their events.
Short’s winning time of 17.66 seconds also was a PR.
Arcata’s Palavi Vainuku was the third boy to win multiple events, placing first in the 300m hurdles with a PR time of 44.35 and teaming with Christopher Bogar, Miguel Obezo and Levi Browne to win the 4x400m relay.
Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg also had a good day and won the boys shot put with a PR throw of 50’ 11”, while teammate Ocean Walker was first home in the 3200m in a time of 10 minutes 52.34 seconds.
Rounding out the boys winners on the day, Eureka senior John Stephens Powers won the pole vault for the second straight league meet and McKinleyville’s Orphao Nowell-Grande won the long jump.
In girls competition, five different athletes won multiple events, a group that included Eureka’s Elizabeth Rominger and Isabella Claussen, Arcata’s Ada Kinziger and Anna McLaughlin, and St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus.
Four of the winning marks were PRs, including McLaughin in the triple jump (32’ 9”), Rominger in the 200m (26.43 seconds) and Kinziger in the 400m (1:02.33).
Gold Beach freshman Coco Plaep also set a new PR in the 800m, placing first in a time of 2:36.71.
Rominger has been one of the most impressive Loggers this season and her contributions to the team have not gone unnoticed.
“Again, she’s such a hard worker,” Valdez said of the sophomore standout. “And just her overall attitude has been fantastic. Her attitude towards track, towards everyone on the team, towards academics. And she’s such a stellar athlete.”
McLaughlin capped a good day by also winning the long jump, while Kinziger teamed with Savannah Leary, Lilah Durham and Bella Decarli to win the 4x400m relay and Rominger joined teammates Andrea Rivas, Evelyn Ladika and Grecia Ortiz to place first in the 4x100m relay.
Claussen, meanwhile, continued to impress in the girls throwing events with a pair of first places.
The Eureka senior won the shot put for the second straight week and also had the best throw of the day in the discus.
“Claussen has been fantastic,” Valdez said of the Loggers standout who set a big PR a week ago in the shot put with a throw of 36’ 2” and should contend for a league title in both of her favorite events next month. “She’s the type of person that won’t take losing as an option. She definitely works her butt off.”
St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus also continued to impress at this week’s meet and placed first mom the 100m hurdles and the high jump for the second week in both events.
Del Norte’s Jeana Erler had a big day for her team, winning the 100m in a time of 13.43 seconds and placing second in both the 200m and the high jump, while her teammate Avery Ritter won the 300m hurdles.
Rounding out the winners on the day, Arcata’s Maleah Jackson won the pole vault and her teammate Sonya Chisholm won the 1600m, while Eureka’s Claire Gast placed first in the 3200m.
The H-DNL boys and girls will be back at McKinleyville High School next Wednesday for the third league meet of the spring.
