Former H-DNL players step up as CR men sweep two at Siskiyous

The College of the Redwoods baseball team is closing out the season strong.

On Friday, the CR men traveled to Siskiyous and swept a doubleheader, winning 5-0 and 10-7, and they have now won four of their last five games, as well as the completion of a suspended game against Shasta from earlier in the year.

And several local players have been leading the way in recent weeks, including former Arcata Tiger Miles Oliver.

Oliver got the start on the mound for Friday’s opener and he pitched a complete-game shutout.

The 2023 Arcata High graduate frustrated the Siskiyous bats all game and gave up just four base hits and two walks and struck out seven.

“For him to go out there and put up a shutout, it was really great to see,” CR head coach John Downey said.

Oliver got more than enough offensive help from his teammates, who scored five runs on seven hits, including multiple hits by two other former H-DNL standouts.

Former McKinleyville Panther Tenoch Tapia was 2-for-5 and scored a pair of runs, while former Eureka Logger Seth Grammer was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run.

CR’s Oscar Rudman also had a couple of hits in the game, including a double, as well as reaching base on a walk, and he was involved in three of the team’s runs, scoring one and driving in two more.

The Redwoods men broke the deadlock in the top of the third and continued to build momentum with additional scores in three of the next four innings.

They also played errorless ball in the win.

Justin Powell rounded out a seven-hit team performance and had three RBIs.

Former St. Bernard’s Crusader Bode Joyner, who is enjoying a big season with the team, showcased his speed with two stolen bases.

The CR men would carry the momentum into game two of the doubleheader, rallying from a pair of deficits.

They opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third, but found themselves 3-1 down going into the fourth.

However, they would re-take the lead with four more runs over the next two innings, only to fall behind again when the home added four runs in the seventh.

But a late surge by the visitors saw them score five unanswered runs in the eighth and ninth innings to pull out their third straight win.

“I was really, really proud of the guys today,” Downey said. “They were really resilient.”

Former Fortuna Husky Drew Franklin got the win on the mound.

The 2024 Fortuna graduate, who has been one of his team’s most impressive pitchers this spring, threw six innings and gave up six hits and two walks while striking out five.

Josh Crane got the win in relief, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing one hit and striking out one.

The CR bats racked up an impressive 15 hits in game two, with Tapia impressing again and capping a good day with two more hits.

The 2024 McKinleyville graduate, who was a part of the Panthers’ Big 5 championship team as a senior, also drove in two runs.

Another member of that 2024 Big 5 winning team, Tyson Bragg, also had a big game at the plate for CR and finished 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run.

Joyner also had a hit and an RBI, while Grammer added an RBI.

Rudman capped a big day with two more hits, while CR’s Justin Powell had three hits, including two doubles.

Catcher Jack Irvine also had two hits in the win.

With the two victories, the CR men improved to 7-15 in the Golden Valley Conference and 10-21 on the season.

They will close out a three-game series against Siskiyous on Saturday, with first pitch set for noon.

With the two losses, Siskiyous dropped to 3-19 in conference and 5-25-1 overall.
