The Del Norte girls will carry plenty of momentum into Saturday’s big softball doubleheader at Fortuna.

On Friday, the Warriors traveled to play Brookings-Harbor in non-conference action and prevailed 17-3 in five innings, stretching their winning streak to eight straight.

The two-time defending Big 5 champions, who are now 10-1, will likely be tested against a red-hot Fortuna team that is expected to challenge them all the way for this year’s conference championship and have been every bit as impressive so far this season.

The Huskies are 11-1 and have won seven straight games, including three their first three in the Big 5.

On Wednesday, they dominated McKinleyvile in an 11-1 win to take over sole possession of top spot in the Big 5 standings.

The Warriors had a midweek bye in conference action and are 2-0 in the Big 5 after opening with a doubleheader sweep at Arcata High on Saturday.

Their offense came to plain Friday with a big team performance at the plate and several players hitting successfully in the lopsided victory.

“We had lots of hitting all throughout the lineup well into our non-starters,” head coach Aaron Healy said.

Audrey Phillips provided the offensive highlight of the day with a two-run home run.

Reigning Big 5 MVP Carlee Harper also continued to impress.

“Carlee Harper found her way on base and did what she does best,” Healy said of the senior standout, who is enjoying another big season for the team. “Steal bases and score.”

Freshman Addi Whitford also continued to impress and has quickly adapted to the varsity level.

Whitford impressed in the circle and got the win, with senior ace Shay Nolan throwing the last couple of innings to close out the game.

“The defense had a couple of mishaps, but all in all did their job,” the coach added.

Saturday’s big doubleheader, which will go a long way towards deciding this year’s conference championship, gets under way at 1 a.m.

Game two is set for 1 p.m.

Brookings-Harbor dropped to 6-5.
