With a bye in Big 5 action this weekend, the Arcata Tigers hosted Etna in a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
The visitors took game 6-1 behind a dominant performance by senior pitcher Emmett Stacher, but the Tigers responded with a bounce-back win in game two by a score of 9-4.
With the split, the Arcata boys are now 9-5 on the season.
Stacher pitched a one-hitter for the Lions and struck out 15 on his way to the win on the mound.
Freshman Max Dixon had the only hit of the game for the home team.
Liam Gorona and Joe Wellik combined on the mound for the Tigers, with Gorona taking the loss.
Both Arcata pitchers, however, threw well, as did Tanner Kees in game two.
“All three of our pitchers pitched very, very well,” Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti said. “The problem was their pitcher was just dominant in the first game. He’s a legit college player.”
Game two was a different story.
Kees pitched a complete game for the win.
The junior gave up just two earned runs and walked four while striking out 10.

He helped his own cause at the plate with one of the Tigers’ eight hits.
“I was happy with the kids that they didn’t bow their heads after getting one hit (in the opener),” Ghisetti said. “We came out to play and we were able to do some good things.”
The Tigers did a good job getting some timely hits with runners in scoring position.
Charlie Mager led the way at the plate and was 3-for-4, while AJ Greenway also made some noise at the plate and was 2-for-3.
Gorona and Finn Warner each also had a base it for the Tigers.
Next up, the Arcata boys will return to conference play when they host Fortuna on Wednesday.
With the split, the Lions are now 9-4.
