Cubs bounce back, edge the Warriors to go to 1-1 in the Little 4

One day after getting blown out in their conference opener in baseball at Hoopa, the South Fork Cubs responded in the best way possible on Friday.

The Cubs welcomed Hoopa to Miranda for the second of four Little 4 games between the two schools and won 2-1 to move into a tie with the Warriors for second in the conference standings.

Both teams are now 1-1 in the L4.

“We did just enough to get the W,” said South Fork head coach Alex Finn, whose team fell 12-1 at Hoopa just 24 hours earlier.

Travis “T-Bone” Way got the win on the mound, holding the visiting bats to just two hits on the day.

The junior pitcher threw a complete game and struck out eight.

“Travis was very efficient,” the coach said of the pitcher, who threw just 82 pitches in the game.

The Warriors were unable to keep the momentum from their conference opener going, but a lot of that had to do with the Cubs.

“Give the other team credit,” Hoopa head coach Aaron Williams said. “Their pitcher kept us off balance throughout the game.

“Congrats to them.”

Bodhi Howes had a good day at the plate in the win and finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and four stolen bases.

Kael Puno also impressed for the home team and was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while John Stafslien was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

The performance, however, was far from perfect as a young Cubs team continues to learn on the fly.

“It was kind of a slow game,” Finn said. “We had some base running that I wasn’t happy with and we probably should have made more contact.

“But again we’re still a young team. Most of our starting lineup are underclassmen. As we continue to play more games and practice we’ll get better.”

Delmer Ferris led the Warriors on offense and finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Ferris drove in Barret Myers for the team’s only run of the game.

The Hoopa bats made contact, but were unable to take advantage of it.

“We were hitting the ball but just right at guys,” Williams said. “And we had some base errors.”

With the loss, the Warriors dropped to 4-3 on the season, while the Cubs are now 3-5 overall.

“It was good to get the momentum going into a very tough matchup against St. Bernard’s on Tuesday,” Finn said.
