Pitching and reliable defense was the story of the day for the Eureka Loggers, who swept a conference-opening doubleheader at Fortuna.
Junior Ty Crawford and freshman Brayden Bremers both pitched complete games and led the Loggers to a pair of 7-0 wins.
The impressive duo combined to give up just five hits on the day, and were backed with errorless team ball.
Team ace Crawford finished with a very impressive 16 strikeouts in game one, which was just three shy of the single-game school record held by Myles Standish.
“I was impressed with both guys,” Eureka head coach Tommy Gale said of the pitching. “If they continue to have outings like that we’re going to get a lot of Ws.”
Crawford gave up just three hits and did not walk anyone.
Bremers was equally impressive in his first Big 5 start in game two.
The freshman gave up just two hits and a walk and struck out six.
The Eureka team defense also played at a championship-winning level, which was especially pleasing after a disappointing defensive performance that saw the team commit six errors in a pair of loses at Oakmont earlier in the week.
“What really stuck out to me was zero errors in each game,” Gale said. “We can win a lot of games doing that.
“That was kind of our downfall the last couple of games and we really made a point to the team to handle the baseball and the boys stepped up today doing that.”
Senior Robert Williams provided the offensive highlight of the day with his first high school home run in game two.
“That was wonderful to see,” Gale said of the fourth-year varsity plater, who finished the game 2-for-3 and also had a double. “It was great to see him have his breakout game. He’s a core part of our lineup.”
Crawford also was 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two, while Alex Jimenez had a double and drove in two runs and Royce Olson and Sebastian Standish each also had a base hit.
In game one the Loggers scored three runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back.
Seven different players had one hit each in the win, including doubles by Olson and Garrett Levitt.
Jaydn Payton, Michael Jewell, Bremers, Ryder Mitchell and Bryson Burns each also had a hit in the win.
With the victory, the Loggers improved to 2-0 in the Big 5 and 4-5 on the season.
The Huskies, meanwhile, dropped to 0-2 and 3-8.
