St. Bernard’s, Fortuna and St. Bernard’s all won their tournament games on Friday night to continue impressive starts to the new season for all three teams.

Playing at the Cloverdale tournament, the Crusaders improved to 2-0 with a big win over a big school.

The SB girls defeated Windsor 61-16 to advance to Saturday’s championship game against the host school at 2 p.m.

The Division-2 Windsor girls had no answer for the defending state champs and senior Laila Florvilus.

Florvilus scored a team-high 21 points in the win to maintain her fast start to her final high school season.

Ten different St. Bernard’s players scored in the dominating win, including Samantha Sundberg, who added nine points and Carli Baum, Tally Williams, Makinsey Lemley and Ella Hart, each of whom scored five.

Aliyah Vigil chipped in four points.

Sundberg also won the tournament 3-point shooting contest on Friday.

The Fortuna girls, meanwhile, won a close game at the Colusa tournament, defeating the host school 47-46.

With the victory, the Huskies improved to 4-0.

Jorlynn Villalvazo came up clutch late in the game for the Huskies, making good on a pair of free throws with just 16 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and with her team trailing by one.

The senior led the Huskies with 16 points, while teammate Mariah Bravo added 13 points.

“We played a gritty physical game,” Fortuna head coach Tom Chapman said. “The team kept their composure. The girls took great pride in their defense. Their effort and attitude has been great.”

The Huskies will play for the tournament championship on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 when they face off against Weed.

Impressive freshman Jaylee Keeling also had a good game and added 12 points with a clutch night from the free-throw line, while Bailey Nunez chipped in seven.

Nunez and Avery Ritter both played a key role in the paint, while Kansas Coulson “gave us huge minutes under pressure,” the coach added.

The Warriors will play Henley in the championship game on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The McKinleyville Panthers were also in action at the Yreka tournament and suffered their first loss of the season, falling 57-17 to Henley in the other semifinal and dropping to 3-1 on the season.

It was the Panthers fourth game in five days.
