Redwoods women beat Yuba; CR men drop tournament opener

The College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team got back to winning ways on Friday with a 64-47 win over Yuba at the Shasta Crossover.

The win ended a three-game losing streak as the Corsairs improved to 4-4 on the young season.

“The ladies did a good job of getting back on track with a win,” head coach Bree Northern said. “It wasn’t the cleanest game we have played but they still found a way to push through and get the win.”

Moriah Bowles led the way offensively and finished with 15 points, while Alia Prentiss added 12 points and Cadence Young chipped in 11 points.

“We were able to get a lot of transition points which really helped boost our energy on the court,” Northern said. “We still have work to do, but I’m proud of the ladies for continuing to show up every day and working hard to get better.”

Aniah Gaither added eight points in the win.

The Corsairs will play Solano on Saturday afternoon.

The CR men, meanwhile, lost their tournament opener at their own Coach Tregs Classic, falling to Mendocino 83-75, also on Friday night.

It was the just the second loss of the season for the Corsairs, who dropped to 7-2.

“Mendocino came with supreme toughness and were in it for the long haul competitively,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “Credit to them for their follow through in seeing the game out. They were connected in their purpose. A well-deserved victory.”

Mason Mottashed continued to impress for the tournament hosts and finished with a team-high 18 points, while Brandon Lucas added 14 points and Ty Dahlin finished with 10 points.

The Corsairs led 41-35 at halftime but were unable to maintain the advantage after the interval.

Jayden Green led the Eagles with 17 points.

The CR men will try to bounce back when they play Southwestern Oregon (7-1) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

“Luckily for us we have a game tomorrow, so we’re forced to turn the page,” Bisio added after Friday’s loss. “The disappointment we feel is going to have to wash right through us.”

Southwestern Oregon will give the Corsairs another tough test.

“Southwestern Oregon is loaded, mature, and they really shoot it,” Bisio said. “We’re going to have our work cut out for us. I’m excited to see how our guys respond to the challenge.”
