Alex Cappa highlights Jacks 2024 Hall of Fame class

Former Lumberjacks football star Alex Cappa has been included in the 2024 Cal Poly Humboldt Hall of Fame class, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Cappa, who was a three-time all-American selection during his time with the Jacks and now plays in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals, is one of seven individuals who will be inducted along with the 1979 Lumberjacks men’s cross country team.

Also included in the class are Tiffany Hollingsworth (softball, 2014-17), Marrisa McCay (women’s track and field, 2013-17), Chase Krivashei (football, 2013-17), Robin Meiggs (head coach women’s rowing, 1994-2019), Brent Tocher (men’s track and field, 1996-97), and Robert Webber (football, 2014-17).

The hall of fame ceremony will take place on Oct. 18 at the Sapphire Palace in Blue Lake Casino.

Cappa played for the Jacks from 2014 to 2017 and was named first team all-American in both 2016 and 2017 after also receiving second team all-American honors in 2015.

He was also named Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Offensive Lineman of the Year and a First Team All-GNAC selection in all four seasons that he played at the Redwood Bowl.

The 29-year-old from Dublin was drafted in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018 and has played for the Bengals since 2022 after signing with the team as a free agent.

He won a Super Bowl medal with the Bucs in 2020 and has started 79 games in the NFL.

Cappa is the highest NFL draft pick to come out of Humboldt. 

The 1979 men’s cross country team, meanwhile, finished second at the Division-III national championships and won the Far Western Conference championship under head coach Jim Hunt. 

The team included CPH hall of famers Mark Conover, Frank Ebiner, and Danny Grimes, as well as Tim Becker, Frank Dauncey, Scott Gillis, Roger Innes, Steve Kretsinger, Steve McMahan, Ramon Morales, Kevin O’Hara, Bert Proust, Kevin Searls, Marshal Spalding and Steve Watkins.

Hollingsworth also left her mark in Lumberjacks sports history and was a three-time All-American selection during her time in Humboldt (2014, 2015, 2016).

The second baseman was a part of two NCAA West Regional championship winning teams (2016, 2017) and ranks fourth all-time in program history in hits (290), first all-time in doubles (63) and ninth all-time in career batting average (.369). 

Krivashei played wide receiver for the Jacks and was a five-time All-GNAC selection, earning first-team honors in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

He was named a CoSIDA Academic All-Super Region recipient and graduated with a 3.76 GPA in Kinesiology. 

McCay was an All-American and national champion in the high jump in 2017, jumping 5’ 9.75”. 

Meiggs’ decorated career as head coach at CPH began in 1991 as the head rowing coach for three years when it was a club sport.

She led her teams to seven appearances at the NCAA National Championships and guided the Jacks to two national championships (2012, 2014). 

She also coached the team to five other top-three finishes at the national championships.

Tocher was a national qualifier and an individual champion at the conference level in the 100 meter hurdles in 1997. 

On the school record list, Tocher is first all-time in the 400 meter hurdles (51.92 seconds) and third all-time in the 110 meter hurdles (14.67).

Webber was an All-Region second-team selection and All-Super Region second-team selection in 2017. 

The quarterback held an impressive 25-9 record during his time at Humboldt and holds seven school records, including passing yards in a single game (502), passing yards in a single-season (3270), career passing yards (10,607), passing completions in a single game (44), passing completions in a single-season (274), career passing completions (816) and career touchdown passes (97).
