Pascascio, Collins lead the Big 5 charge at NCS championships

Fortuna senior Russell Pascascio led the way for the Big 5 schools at Saturday’s North Coast Section Redwood Empire track and field championships, as the league had eight top-three finishes at the prestigious meet.

Pascascio cleared 6’ 2” on his way to victory in the boys jump and qualified for this week’s Meet of Champions.

The multi-sport Huskies standout also had a big showing in the triple jump and finished second with a PR jump of 43’ 8”.

His Fortuna teammate Alfonso Medina also impressed in both of those events, placing fifth in the triple jump and sixth in the high jump.

Arcata junior Quincy Collins also had one of the most impressive showings of the day for the H-DNL and placed second in the girls high jump with a PR jump of 5’ 5”, which is tied with St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus for the third best mark in the NCS this spring.

Del Norte sprinter Deken Hanks also had a big day at the big meet and placed third in the boys 100 meters with a time of 11.07 seconds and fourth in the 200m in a time of 22.28 seconds.

Del Norte’s Lily Sherman, meanwhile, placed third in the girls triple jump of 33’ 7.75”, while her teammate Addyson Crabtree placed third in the girls pole vault with a mark of 8’ 8”.

Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg also continued his impressive spring in the boys shot put and finished third with a throw of 47’ 120”, while Eureka’s Evelyn Ladika, Emily Pesch, Elizabeth Rominger and Grecia Ortiz combined to place third in the girls 4x100m relay.

Eureka’s Isabella Claussen placed fourth in both the girls shot put (34’) and the girls discus (104’), as did Fortuna’s Christopher Duey in the boys pole vault (12’ 2”) and Fortuna’s Brylee Barsanti in the girls 100 meters hurdles (16.78 seconds).

H-DNL fifth-place finishers at the prestigious meet included Eureka’s Pesch in the girls 100m, Arcata’s Nathan Whitney in the boys 1600m, Arcata’s Nicole Nozawa in the girls 300m hurdles, the Arcata team of Collins, Nozawa, Ada Kinziger and Bella DeCarli in the girls 4x400m relay, and the Del Norte’s boys team of Hanks, Landon Balentm Dylan Rodriguez and Caden Harrison in the boys 4x400m relay.

Fortuna’s Medina rounded out a very successful individual day with a sixth-place finish in the boys long jump, as did Eureka’s Pesch, who was also sixth in the girls high jump.

Eureka’s Rominger also was sixth in the girls 400m, as was the Arcata’s boys team of Whitney, Kai Frimodig, Eoin McGoldrick and Evan Poston in the boys 4x800m relay.

Eureka’s Victoria Ricca also was seventh in the girls long jump, as was her teammate Ortiz in the girls 400m, Del Norte’s Rodriguez in the boys 800m, and Eureka’s Ortiz, Rominger, Aurora Copeland and Fiona Smart in the girls 4x400m relay.

Eighth-place finishers on the day included Eureka’s Ricca in the girls triple jump, Arcata’s Neiko Bryson in the boys discus, Del Norte’s Cody Burshem in the boys pole vault, and Arcata’s Mayleah Jackson in the girls pole vault.

The Eureka girls and Fortuna boys both placed eighth as a team.
