The Little 4 schools enjoyed a successful trip to the weekend North Coast Section Class A Track and Field Championships, with the league combining to win five different events.
St. Bernard’s junior Laila Florvilus led the way with a couple of wins, taking first in the girls 100 meter hurdles and the high jump, while her senior teammate Madelyn Shanahan won the girls discus.
Not to be out-done, Ferndale senior Isaak Kasso also impressed on his way to winning the boys 110m hurdles, while Southern Trinity’s Dennis Wheeler won the boys high jump.
Florvilus set a PR on her way to victory in the 100m hurdles, finishing in a time of 15.29 seconds, which is the second best mark in the NCS this spring.
She won the high jump with a mark of 5’ 2”, which was three inches off her best jump of the season, which is tied for their best in the NCS this year.
Shanahan meanwhile, comfortably took first in the girls discus with throw of 117’ 3”, which was 12 feet farther than anyone else and remarkably 20 feet better than the third best throw of the day.
Shanahan’s season-best throw of 121’, 9” is the second best in the entire NCS this spring.
Kasso also dominated on his way to winning the boys 110m hurdles, finishing in a time of 14.96 seconds, which was almost a second faster than anyone else.
It was the first time the Ferndale senior broke 15 seconds in the event.
He also PR’d on his way to second place in the triple jump with a jump of 43’ 5”, as well as placing fifth in the 300m hurdles and eighth in the boys long jump.
His younger brother Anthony Kasso rounded out a good day for the family by placing sixth in the 110m hurdles and ninth in the triple jump.

Wheeler, meanwhile, continued his impressive spring in the high jump, placing first with a jump of 5’ 10”.
Several other Little 4 athletes also enjoyed big days at the prestigious meet.
St. Bernard’s Kohlton Hall just missed out on victory in the boys shot put and finished second with a throw of 42’ 1.75”, but he will advance to this week’s NCS Meet of Champions, along with teammates Florvilus and Shanahan.
Hall also placed fifth in the discus.
Another St. Bernard’s athlete, Rihanna Fontenot, also had a good showing on her way to sixth in the girls high jump, giving the Crusaders two of the top six spots in the event, while teammate Quinn Stokesberry was seventh in the girls shot put, Mathew Klopper placed 10th in the boys discus and Alyssa Boham was 12th in both the girls 100m and 200m
Rounding out a big day for the SB girls, the school’s 4x100m relay team placed sixth.
A couple of Hoopa athletes also impressed at the big meet, including sophomore Quincy McDonald, who finished ninth in the boys discus and 10th in the shot put.
