COLLEGE ROUNDUP — Jacks sweep Chico, CR falls to Mendo

The Cal Poly Humboldt softball team stretched its winning streak to five straight games with a four-game series sweep at home against Chico State early this week.

On Monday, the Jacks defeated the Wildcats 5-2 and 9-2, and they followed that with a 10-0 win in five innings in game one on Tuesday, before wrapping up the series with a 7-3 win later on the same day.

Three local players — McKenna Beach (Eureka), Sadie Hampton (Eureka) and Grace Rosebrook (McKinleyville) — all featured in game two of the series.

Beach finished 1-for-2 and scored two runs in the series finale and also had an RBI in the opening game, while Rosebrook scored one of her team’s runs in game two.

For the season, Beach is batting .244 with 10 RBIs.

With the victories, the Humboldt women improved to 22-19 on the season and 12-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Jacks are currently tied for fourth in the conference standings with two series remaining in the regular season.

Next up, they travel to play conference leaders Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game series this weekend.

The College of the Redwoods softball team was also in action this week and dropped both games of a doubleheader at Mendocino College on Wednesday.

The Corsairs fell 10-0 and 5-2 to end a three-game winning streak, which had included a pair of wins at Lassen on Friday.

The Corsairs are now 11-21 overall and 8-8 in the Golden Valley Conference.

The CR women have two doubleheaders remaining on the schedule, including their home finales against Yuba on Saturday at the Bear River sports complex.

The Mendocino Eagles, who feature four former H-DNL players — Savannah Colegrove (Hoopa), Tatianna Colegrove (Hoopa), Raina Ausburn (McKinleyville) and Kelsie Hall (Fortuna) — are now 15-19 overall and 8-6 in the GVC and third in the conference standings.

In local college baseball, meanwhile, the Corsairs dropped a pair of make-up games against Butte on Sunday and Monday, falling 8-2 and 11-5.

The CR men, who have lost six straight, are now 9-17 overall and 2-17 in the GVC.

Next up, the Corsairs are scheduled to play a pair of games at Feather River on Friday and Saturday.
