Arcata, Eureka girls continue to shine in Crescent City

Arcata freshman Bella DeCarli placed first in both the girls 400 meters and 800m to lead the Tigers to a team victory in the third H-DNL track and field meet of the spring at Del Norte on Wednesday.

DeCarli was one of four multiple winners on the day and set a PR in the 400m on her way to her third win in the event in three league meets.

She won the race in a time of 1 minutes, 58 seconds.

Impressive Eureka freshman Elizabeth Rominger placed second in the 400m with the same time, but was edged on a photo finish.

Rominger also was a multiple winner on the day, placing first in the 200m in a time of 27.03 seconds and teaming with Aurora Copeland, Emily Pesch and Grecia Ortiz to win the 4x100m relay for the Loggers, who placed second to Arcata in the team competition.

Pesch also had a good all-around day.

In addition to the relay win, the Eureka senior won the high jump with a jump of 5’ and was second across the line in the 100m, which was won by Arcata’s Mayleah Jackson in a time of 13.23 seconds.

Eureka junior Isabella Claussen was the fourth multiple winner on the day, placing first in both the shot put and discus. 

The victory in the shot put was Claussen’s third in three league meets and she won with a throw of 33’ 4”, while her victory in the discus was her second in league this spring and she won with a throw of 93’ 1”.

In the 800m, DeCarli won with a time of 2:31.73, followed by Arcata’s Zoe Cappuccio in second and Fortuna’s Eryn Hunter in third, while Cappuccio was also second in the 1600m, which was won by Hoopa’s Julia Jackson in a time of 6:18.41, which was her first high school win in track and field.

Fortuna’s Alexa McCall was third in the 1600m.

The Eureka girls swept the top three spots in the 3200m, with senior Sequoia Ashby setting a new PR on her way to the victory in a time of 11:55.24, followed by teammate Miriam Mende in second and Summer Morales in third.

Fortuna’s Brylee Barsanti and St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus placed first in the hurdles races.

Barsanti won the 100m hurdles in a time of 17.50 seconds, followed by Arcata’s Nicole Nozawa in second and Gold Beach’s Eva Mordja in third, while Florvilus set a PR on her way to winning the 300m hurdles with a time of 47.06, followed by Nozawa in second and Fortuna’s Amy Aubuchon in third.

Rounding out the races on Wednesday, the Brookings-Harbor foursome of Johanna Larson, Natalie Runge, Oceana Powers and Lexie Newman placed first in the 4x400m relay, while Eureka’s Ortiz was second in the 200m, Fortuna’s Allie Cox was third in both the 100m and 200m and Brookings’ Newman was third in the 400m.

In the girls pole vault, Del Norte senior Addyson Crabtree took first with a jump of 7’ 6”, followed by Arcata’s Mayleah Jackson and Brookings-Harbor’s Eden Van Maren, who tied for second.

Crabtree’s teammate Lily Sherman also had a successful day and placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 33’ 5”, followed by St. Bernard’s Madelyn Shanahan in second and Arcata’s Anna McLaughlin in third, while Fortuna’s Bella Mitten was first in the long jump with a jump of 14’ 10”, followed by McLaughlin in second and Shanahan in third.

Florvilus capped a good all-around day with a second place in the high jump, followed by Del Norte’s Sherman in third, while Del Norte’s Hollyn Wakefield was second in both the shot put and discus.

Rounding out the top three finishers on the day, Del Norte’s Breann Winingham placed third in the shot put and St. Bernard’s Natalie McLaughlin was third in the discus.

Arcata won the team competition with 118 points, followed by Eureka (101), Del Norte (70), Fortuna (69) and St. Bernard’s (59).
