Huskies sweep doubleheader at Fort Bragg, go to 10-0 on the year

The red-hot Fortuna Huskies became the first 10-win team in the H-DNL this spring with a doubleheader sweep in softball at Fort Bragg on Tuesday.

After finishing second in the Big 5 in each of the past two seasons, the Huskies appear to be the team to beat in conference this spring and will be hoping to secure a first conference championship since 2017.

Early indications suggest they will be tough to stop.

They continued their impressive start to the new campaign with the two victories over the Timberwolves, winning 6-0 and 19-1 in five innings.

Playing in 70-degree weather, the Fortuna pitching was too much for the home team, which managed just one run over the two games.

Senior Isabel Sanchez got the start in both games, pitching a complete-game shutout in the opener, while giving up just three hits and one walk and striking out 12 batters.

She combined with freshman Kaylee Castillo in game two, pitching three innings and giving up one unearned run on two hits and a walk and striking out seven.

Castillo made her high school debut in the circle in relief, talking over in the bottom of the fourth and pitching two scoreless innings to help secure the win.

The young Castillo was well up for the challenge and did not give up a hit or a walk while striking out two.

Both pitchers got plenty of offensive support.

Hailee Thompson and Addie Collenberg led the way at the plate in game one, finishing with a pair of hits each, including a double by Thompson and an RBI by Collenberg.

Naiya Castillo also had a double and an RBI, while Sanchez, Olivia Hayes and Sophia Castillo had RBIs.

Game two got away from the home team early, as the Huskies scored four runs in each of the first three innings on the way to ending the game early.

Sophomore infielder Sophia Castillo led the way with three hits, including two doubles and six RBIs, while junior catcher Evalynn Little had three hits and two RBIs and freshman infielder Mia Tiedeman had two hits, including a double and four RBIs.

Thompson also had two hits and three RBIs, and Hayes had a hit and RBI.

Next up, the Fortuna girls will try to keep their impressive start to the season going when they host Windsor in a single game on Saturday, with first pitch at 10 a.m.

That game will be followed by a JV doubleheader against Del Norte.
