The Del Norte Warriors are quickly finding their groove on the baseball fields.
After opening the season with back-to-back losses and a tie, the Del Norte boys have now won four straight games, including three wins in three games at the Yreka tournament this weekend.
On Saturday, the Warriors shut out the host school in the tournament championship game, 3-0, with junior pitcher Preston Daniels getting his second win of the season on the mound.
Daniels threw just 84 pitches in a complete-game performance and has been a definite bright spot for the Warriors this spring.
And that makes him one of our athletes of the week.
“Presto was the man,” Del Norte head coach Jeff Cook said after Saturday’s win.
But he’s not the only Del Norte player impressing early in the new season.
“We started hitting the ball well,” Cook said of the tournament performance. “We played some good small ball today. .. small ball at its best.”
The Warriors also defeated Mt. Shasta 12-3 and Las Plumas 9-8 in tournament play and are now 4-2-1 on the season.
“We’re getting hits when we need them and the confidence is getting better,” Cook added. “It’s still early and we’re still messing with the lineup a little.”

Taylor Saxon led the team at the plate against Mt Shasta and finished 4-for-5, while teammate Hunter Wells did a good job finding ways to consistently get on base.
Daniels also stayed hot at the plate and added a couple of base hits against Mt. Shasta, while Colin Tromble got the win on the mound with a strong performance.
Freshman Marcus Parras threw the final two innings to help seal the victory.
Against Las Plumas, which is a Division-2 program, Aiden Rice finished 2-for-2 and scored three runs, while Saxon remained hot at the plate and was 2-for-4.
Anthony Cardenas drove in two pivotal runs in the sixth to give his team the lead, while the red-hot Daniels finished the game 3-for-4.
Another freshman, Landon Williams, pitched the final two innings in relief for his first high school win on the mound.
Next up, the Warriors will play a non-league game at Ferndale on March 26.
