Former Del Norte Warrior Tianna Thompson continued her impressive start to the new college track field season with another big showing against Division-2 opposition at the weekend Wildcat Invitational hosted by Chico State.
The sophomore sprinter placed first in both the women’s 100 meters and 200 meters, including setting a PR in the former with a time of 12.29 seconds.
The speedy Gasquet native was one of several bright spots for the Corsairs, who had roughly 30 PRS, according to head coach Reed Elmore.
“We had an extraordinary meet running against D-2 schools, including Humboldt and Chico,” Elmore said. “The team had about 30 PRs. Overall we are extremely happy with this.”
Among the most impressive performances of the day, CR’s Henry Lamb posted a state qualification time with a first-place finish in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
Lamb set a PR with a time of 9 minutes, 48.61 seconds, knocking a remarkable 51 seconds off his previous best time.
Lamb’s time is the top mark in Northern California this season and second best in all of California.
Former Eureka Logger Anna Grimmett also had an outstanding day in the women’s steeplechase.
She placed sixth in the event with a PR of 13:11.63, which was a new school record for CR.

Among the other highlights of the day for CR, former Del Norte Warrior Bryson Price set a PR in the shot put with a throw of 12.47m and placed seventh.
Four of the top seven finishers in the event had North Coast ties.
The event was won by Chico State’s Chance Hefter (15.87m), a former CR standout who was named California Collegiate Athletic Association men’s track and field athlete of the week after winning three events on the day, also including the discus and the hammer.
Former Eureka Logger Joseph Gonzalez finished third (13.68m) while competing for Cal Poly Humboldt and former Del Norte Warrior Gavin Skerik placed sixth (12.56m) competing for Shasta College.
Also impressing for CR, Fortuna’s Lonna Torrez placed fifth in the women’s discus with a throw of 35.53m, while Del Norte’s Junior Nunez was second in the men’s javelin with a PR and state qualifying throw of 49.35m.
Freshman Violet Cayton placed fourth in the women’s javelin with a throw of 30.21m, while Airiana Adams was fifth in the women’s short put with a throw of 10.28m, one place ahead of teammate Torrez.
“Some people didn’t quite their PRs but are working on certain aspects of their event and are still very optimistic about their season,” Elmore added. “Overall, this was a great meet for us, starting with the throws and the snowball kept rolling and everyone just kept getting better.”
Among the Cal poly Humboldt standouts, former Eureka Logger Ginny Brooks placed fourth in the women’s 100m hurdles in a time of 15.44 seconds, an event that was won by her teammate Joy Hano in a time of 14.02.
