Russell Pascascio had a double-double on Tuesday night, as the Fortuna Huskies secured their third straight victory in boys basketball, winning 60-50 at South Fork.

The senior standout, who is enjoying a very strong start to the season, finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Fortuna boys came out fired up and opened up a 20-13 lead after the opening quarter.

After the visitors had stretched the lead to 18 in the fourth quarter, South Fork’s Shevy Bero-Van Meter keyed a late rally for the home team with a flurry of 3-pointers.

The win lifts the Huskies to 7-4 on the season, while the Cubs are now 9-3.

“I feel good about how we competed tonight,” South Fork head coach Taylor Morrow said. “It showed we can compete with bigger schools.”

Alfonso Medina scored a game-high 20 points and added eight rebounds for the Huskies, while Kobe Spaulding returned to the lineup after missing a few games through illness and had an immediate impact with 14 points.

Mason Toroni added six points in the win, while teammate Kallen Barrote finished with eight boards and seven assists.

Tommy Rotbergs scored a team-high 17 points for the Cubs, while Bero-Van Meter finished with 13 points, including three 3s.

“We got beat in transition the whole game, but even with that found good shots on offense,” Morrow said. “We just couldn’t get enough to fall to make (Fortuna) nervous.”

South Fork’s Wesley Way also had a good game at both ends of the floor and did a good job “facilitating the offense, playing defense and getting rebounds,” according to his coach.

And he did so while playing through a rolled ankle.

Del Norte 53, Brookings-Harbor 38

The Warriors overcame a sluggish night shooting the ball on the way to their ninth victory of the season at Brookings-Harbor.

Junior guard Brooklyn Carter continued to impress and scored a team-high 16 points as the Warriors improved to 9-2.

Jaclyn Gorbet added 13 points in the win, while teammate Lauren Stutes finished with nine points.

“(We were) a little sloppy but played well for a few stretches to close the game,” said Del Norte head coach Dylan Nelson, who added “Brookings made it a game.”

The victory was a nice response after the Del Norte girls suffered just their second loss of the season in the final of the Central Valley tournament over the weekend.

“We missed a lot of shots we usually make and turned the ball over more than we would like,” Nelson said. “Overall, (I was) proud we pulled it together after coming out slow.”
