BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — Wildcats knock off Big 5 rival; Cubs win

Ferndale held Fortuna to just eight second-half points on the way to knocking off their closest rivals in non-league girls basketball on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats won 40-31 and improved to 7-3 on the season, while the Huskies dropped to 9-4.

In other games on Wednesday, the South Fork girls beat Potter Valley 42-11 to improve to 8-5.

At Ferndale, Micaela Ellsmore and Madison Gossi each scored a game-high 10 points for the Wildcats, who have now won three straight games.

But it was the team defense that paved the way to victory with a big second half.

“We did not match Ferndale’s energy,” Fortuna head coach Tom Chapman said. “Ferndale did a great job tonight.”

Mariah Bravo scored a team-high seven points for the Huskies, while teammate Kalie Chittenden finished with six points.

The Fortuna girls had an off night shooting the ball.

“We could not strong together buckets or gain any momentum,” Chapman said. “The ball was not falling for us.”

The South Fork girls, meanwhile, won for the fifth time in six games.

And they also won with some strong defense, holding Potter Valley to four points or less in each of the four quarters.

Cadence Young continued to impress for the Cubs and scored a game-high 17 points, while Karalyn Worsick finished with 10 points and Cloe McConnell chipped in six points.
