Cal Poly Humboldt junior Emilia Long is enjoying an outstanding year competing for the Jacks.

After helping to lead the Humboldt women’s soccer team to a postseason berth in the fall, Long has carried her impressive form into the winter season and has quickly adapted to the basketball court where she is playing a key role for the Jacks.

The standout junior guard has been particularly impressive on the defensive side of the ball and leads all Division-II players in the nation with 4.57 steals a game.

Through seven games, Long already has 32 steals.

The Peninsula College transfer and dual sport student-athlete is on pace to shatter the program record for most steals in a single season, which is currently held by Trina Dukes, who had 98 steals in the 1994-95 season.

The 5-foot-9 guard, who graduated from Port Angeles High School in Washington, also played a pivotal role for the Lumberjacks women’s soccer team, which qualified for the California Collegiate Athletic Association postseason tournament this year.

Long led the team with eight goals and also finished with a team-best seven assists.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women’s basketball team is 4-4 heading into the Christmas break.

The Jacks are riding a two-game losing streak and will try to get back on track when they play at Chico State on New Year’s Eve.

In addition to her 32 steals, Long also leads the team in scoring with 14.9 points a game and has dished out a team-high 29 assists.
