By Ray Hamill — From the opening month of the high school sports year here on the North Coast, you got the impression it might be a good one for the Ferndale Wildcats.

Little did we know how good it would be.

Similar to how the Del Norte Warriors dominated our end-of-year high school awards last year, the Cats have dominated this year.

In addition to earning our Team of the Year honors for the school’s football team, Ferndale head coach Clint McClurg also took home Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Cats to an incredible campaign.

But that’s not all for Ferndale sports, which won four of the six award categories.

Twins Tanner and Tinnley Pidgeon also enjoyed spectacular years.

Tanner was named Humboldt Sports Little 4 Boys co-Athlete of the Year, while Tinnley took home the award for L4 Girls Athlete of the Year for the second straight year.

Both Pidgeons were three-sport standouts and excelled in all three sports, while earning all-league recognition in all three and combining for three MVP awards.

All in all, it was a year Cats fans won’t easily forget and one that set them apart from the rest of the H-DNL.
