Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Del Norte’s Lili Nunez has enjoyed a lot of success on multiple sports fronts this year.
Del Norte’s Lili Nunez is coming off a big month competing in the javelin.
The Warriors junior is one of the best volleyball and basketball players in the H-DNL, but this summer she is proving to be equally proficient in the javelin, and perhaps even more so.
On June 15, she placed an impressive 15th in the event while competing against some of the top young throwers in the nation at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Oregon, with a throw of 116’ 4.5”.
She followed that with a fifth-place finish at the USATF Oregon Association Junior Olympic Championships in Eugene this past weekend with a throw of 116’ 8.5”.
The soon-to-be senior was a sprint star for the Warriors during the high school season and teamed with Mayleah Jackson, Abbie O’Reiley and Gianna Taylor to win a league championship in the girls 4×100 meter relay last month.
She was also our Humboldt Sports Girls Basketball Player of the Year this past winter and an all-league selection in volleyball after helping the Warriors to a Big 5 championship.
But her success in the javelin may surpass all of that.
Nunez has been competing in the javelin since she was in middle school in Oregon and placed sixth at the Oregon State Championships 6A classification (largest division) as a freshman at West Salem High School before transferring to Del Norte.
Her PR in the event is 128’ 9”, which she set in April at the Prefontaine Rotary Invitational and is the second best high school mark by a Californian girl this year.
