Saturday was a busy one for local baseball.

The Humboldt Eagles were playing at the District 1 Class A championships in Fairfield and won for the third time in three days, defeating the Solano Mudcats 17-10 to go to 3-1 in tournament play.

Unfortunately, however, it was not enough to qualify them for Sunday’s tourney semifinals.

A couple of North Coast Little League teams were also in action on Saturday.

The Eel River 10-year-old All-Stars opened play at their NorCal State tournament in Fremont, but lost 16-1 to Twin Cities out of Larkspur.

The young Eel River players will try to bounce back and keep their season going when they play Hollister on Sunday morning at 11:30. 

The Del Norte Senior All-Stars played host Oakland at their Regional tournament and lost 9-0.

The young Del Norte players are now 2-1 in tournament play and will to bounce back on Sunday.

The Eagles opened their tournament on Thursday with a 6-4 loss to the Fairfield Expos, but they have won three straight games since then, including a doubleheader sweep on Friday.

They beat the Siskiyous Spirits 8-4 and the All Pro Navy 8-0, before getting the better of Solano on Saturday.

“Our bats were cold on Thursday. I don’t know if it was the long drive down the day before,” Eagles manager TJ Brogan said. “But since then, they’ve been on an absolute tear.”

Several players stepped up for the Eagles, but no one more so than Bryce Pope, who has been on fire at the plate the last few days.

Pope hit an inside-the-park home run on opening day, had a base hit and two RBIs against Siskiyous, and was 2-for-2 with a two-RBI double against All Pro.

He was even more impressive in Saturday’s game, finishing 4-for-4 and scoring four runs.

For good measure, he also pitched three strong innings to close out Saturday’s game.

“He’s on fire,” Brogan said.

Several other players also stepped up for the Eagles on Saturday, including Henry Hinrichs, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs, as well as Lucas Ask, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of two-run doubles and three runs.

Brayden Bermers also had a pair of two-run doubles and finished 3-for-4 with six RBIs.

Kyle Giacone got the start on the hill and threw three solid innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.

Giacone also was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Scotty Brogan finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks and Bryson Burns added an RBI triple.

“They’re killing it right now,” TJ Brogan said. “That loss on Thursday set that fire they needed and every game has been better than the last.”

Bermers got the start on the mound for the tournament opener and threw five solid innings, but the Eagles offense didn’t give him much help.

Scotty Brogan got the start against Siskiyous and threw 5.1 strong innings for the win, giving up just two earned runs and striking out three, while Ask had a two-run triple and finished with three RBIs.

Against All Pro, 14-year-old Ty Wade got the start and did not disappoint, allowing just four hits and no walks in five scoreless innings and striking out four.

And he pitched the complete game on just 57 pitches.

In addition to Pope’s big game at the plate, Giacone also was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Wade, Bermers and Burns each had a base hit and an RBI.

Eel River All-Stars

It was a disappointing start to tournament play for the District and Section champs in Fremont, but there are no easy games this deep into the postseason.

They’ll get a chance to quickly put it behind them when they take the field again on Sunday morning.

Drake Bohn and Miusel Junior Mandujano Soto had the only two hits of the game for Eel River, which lost for just the second time all summer.

“Their pitchers threw strikes and we didn’t play to our capabilities today,” Eel River manager Erik Bess said. “We didn’t pitch bad, we just didn’t field the ball.”

The team finished with five errors.

Bess, however, is confident his players will find a way to bounce back.

“Tomorrow’s a new day. We’ll be fine,” the manager said. “We told the kids ‘you got this far, so come out and play ball like you can.’”
