TEAMS OF THE WEEK — Young baseball players continue to impress this week

By Ray Hamill — Two area Little League teams are representing the North Coast at a pair of prestigious tournaments this week, as an exciting season of summer baseball begins to wind down.

The Del Norte Senior All-Stars and the Eel River 10-year-old All-Stars are coming off impressive weeks to keep their seasons going, and both teams are playing at a high level right right now.

Which makes them our choice for co-teams of the week.

The young Del Norte players recently won an Oregon state championship to advance to the regional tournament in Oakland.

They opened regional tournament play with back-to-back wins on Wednesday and Thursday to advance in the winners’ bracket.

Del Norte got the tournament started with an 11-1 win over the Wyoming state champs on Wednesday, before shutting out the Nevada state champs 8-0 the following day.

After a day off on Friday, which allowed them to take in an exciting San Francisco Giants’ walk-off win, they will resume tournament play against tournament host Oakland on Saturday night.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

The team is coached by Bradley Sharp and includes includes Michael Mavris, Taylor Shrewsberry, Jaxon Sharp, Alex Gonzalez, Lucas Lopez, Aidyn Nelson, Elijah Crespo, Carver Overlin, Trevin Miller and Lucas Fox.

The young Eel River All-Stars have been every bit as impressive.

The District 26 champs traveled to Clearlake for their Section tournament this past week and came home with a championship banner after defeating Westside Chico 18-8 in a true championship game on Wednesday night.

And they displayed a lot of composure and heart for such a young group of players.

After a disappointing 14-9 loss to Westside Chico on Tuesday night, Eel River bounced back with a much better team performance to take the title just 24 hours later.

The roster is coached by Erik Bess and includes Knox Danielson, Truen Cobb, Miusel Junior Mandujano Soto, Kesler Lake Carter Bess, Daniel Bazan, Drake Bohn, Gio Lanza, Jayce Fockaert, Kobe Stockley, Teigen Weitzel and William Lammanuzzi.

They will now advance to the NorCal State tournament, which gets under way in Fremont this weekend.

Eel River opens tournament play against Twin Cities on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
