College of the Redwoods sophomore Sadie Hampton hit her first-ever college home run on Tuesday as the Corsairs swept a softball doubleheader at Mendocino College.

The CR women won 11-6 and 14-5 to improve to 6-6 on the season.

Hampton hit her home run in game one with two runners on and she finished the game 3-for-5.

“Seeing Sadie hit her first-ever home run was so cool to watch and made me so happy because she has been so close before and is one of the hardest working players we have,” head coach Megan Valente said of the Eureka High graduate. “She never goes up to bat looking to hit a home run but has the power to do it every time, and as our lead-off batter that’s scary to opponents.”

Redwoods trailed 2-1 early in the game, but took control with nine runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings.

Renee Mertz also had a good game and finished 3-for-4 with three runs, while Kyla Pontoni was 3-for-5 with a double, Catlin Caughie was 3-for-4 with a double, and Kyla Cockerham was 3-for-4.

Ashley Ballew and Brooke Faraimo each also had two hits with a double.

Kylee Dewey struck out four for the win in the circle, her third of the season.

Allie Egbert got the win in game two, striking out four for her third win of the season, while helping her own cause at the plate and finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

CR scored five runs in the top of the first to take control and added five more in the fourth to open up a 10-1 lead.

Faraimo led the way offensively and finished 3-for-5 with three runs, while Hampton remained hot at the plate and added two more hits, including a double.

Ballew also had two hits, including a triple, while Caughie had three hits, including two doubles.

“Catlin Caughie got her bat rolling and really saw the ball well and made great contact every at-bat,” Valente said.

Road games against Los Medanos and Ohlone, scheduled for Friday, are unlikley to go ahead because of the weather.

The CR women are scheduled to play their home openers in a doubleheader against Yuba on Tuesday.
