By Ray Hamill — As they get set for their playoff opener this weekend, the history-making College of the Redwoods men dominated the Golden Valley Conference basketball end-of-season awards.
Not only did the Corsairs set a single-season program record for most wins with 25, but they also secured a three-peat of conference championships for the first time in program history and became the first GVC team to do so in 44 years.
Over the weekend, freshman guard Trey Neff was named conference MVP, with four of his teammates also receiving all-conference honors and head coach Ryan Bisio named Conference Coach of the Year.
Bisio, who was hired as head coach of the program in February 2019, has led the Corsairs to a conference championship in all three seasons he has been in charge, continuing that success this winter with a very new-look roster.
Neff, who was recruited out of Medford, had an immediate impact with the team this winter and led the GVC with 20.7 points a game, which was the third best average in all of NorCal.
His points total this season is the eighth best in program history and he also received first-team all-state honors.
“You’re not going to find many players with the ingredients he possesses,” Bisio said of the freshman standout. “Coaching him is a dream come true.”
Teammates Jon Nchekwube and Jett Cheong each also were included as all-conference first-team selections.
Cheog was second in conference with 4.5 assists a game, while Nchekwube led the state in rebounds per game (17.3) and was nominated for all-state honors for the second straight year.
His 484 rebounds this winter set a new school record for a single season, a mark he broke during Friday’s season-finale victory over Feather River on Friday night.
His 843 career rebounds is also a new program record.

Redwoods will play either Consumnes River or West Hills-Leemore at home on Saturday night.
