GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — Crusaders, Panthers in action

The St. Bernard’s girls lost an exciting championship game in overtime at the Berean Christian tournament on Thursday night, falling to the host school 55-52.

Laila Florvilus scored a team-high 19 points in the loss, while teammate Madelyn Shanahan finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and adding a remarkable 11 blocked shots.

It was another strong performance by the Crusaders, who closed out their four pre-Christmas tournaments with two championships, a second place and a third place.

“What an amazing game tonight,” head coach Matt Tomlin said. “So proud of these ladies for their heart and effort.

“We lost in overtime, but these ladies impressed me with their connectivity and bond as a team. I am a very proud coach.”

Aliyah Vigil added eight points on Thursday, while Mataya Sherman and Rihanna Fontenot each scored four, Alyssa Boham had two points and Hannah Finck one.

Florvilus and Shanahan were both named to the all-tournament team.

The St. Bernard’s girls are now 10-2 on the season.

McKinleyville 46, Lincoln 24

The Panthers broke open a close game with a big third quarter on the way to defeating Lincoln 46-24 on Thursday.

Playing at the three-day Justin-Siena classic, the Mack girls outscored the Mustangs 13-0 in the third to take control and they led by 18 going into the final period.

Camryn Pinard led the offense with 20 points, as the Panthers upped their record to 10-3.

Bella Turner also had a big game and finished with nine points, seven of them coming in the first quarter.

Kim Lewis chipped in seven points in the victory, while Morgan Stubbs had four points.

The win was the second straight for the Panthers, who also defeated the host school 45-33 on Wednesday.

They closed out the three-day classic 2-1.

The Mustangs dropped to 4-7.
