Photos by Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Madelyn Shanahan scored a team-high 24 points for St. Bernard’s on Thursday night.

One night after suffering their first loss of the season, the St. Bernard’s girls responded with a hard-fought 49-47 win over Yreka at the Panthers Classic on Thursday.

Also in action at the McKinleyville tournament, the Eureka Loggers defeated Weed 48-29 to go to 2-0 at the tournament.

Elsewhere on a busy Thursday night, the Arcata Tigers opened the Red Bluff tournament with a comfortable 67-31 over the host school, while Del Norte defeated Lassen 63-52 at the Central Valley tournament.

The Crusaders led by 10 at the interval, but the Miners battled back to make a game of it in the second half.

Madelyn Shanahan paced the St. Bernard’s offense with 24 points, while teammate Aliyah Vigil finished with 10 points.

SB head coach Matt Tomlin described it as a “great bounce back win against a good Yreka team.”

Mataya Sherman added seven points in the win, as the Crusaders improved to 7-1, while teammate Aimayah Her chipped in four points.

The St. Bernard’s girls will continue tournament play on Saturday.

Yreka, which dropped to 6-3, will play McKinleyville on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers welcomed back junior guard Nora Talty to their lineup at the Red Bluff tournament on Thursday night, and she had an immediate impact.

Talty has been sidelined since the start of the season and her return gives head coach Doug Oliveira plenty of depth at the guard position, along with Alia Prentiss, Addison Wingate and Leitala Vainuku.

Talty scored a team-high 17 points in her first game of the season, while Wingate added 15 points and Vainuku and Melanie Luh each finished with 10 points.

“We’ve been the walking wounded with sickness and without Nora,” Oliveira said. “So it was nice to have some people back.”

The Tigers. Who are still missing three players, have impressed despite being shorthanded early in the season and are now 6-2.

They continue tournament play against Enterprise on Friday, and if they win they could end up playing for a tournament championship against University Prep on Saturday.
