It was a good day for the H-DNL wrestlers at last weekend’s McKinleyville tournament, with local boys winning 10 of the 14 weight divisions.
A number of the top local wrestlers were not on hand, traveling instead to compete at some big out-of-area tournaments, but those that were got some valuable mat time in preparation for the upcoming league schedule.
The Fortuna Huskies enjoyed the day more than most, with five of their grapplers placing first.
Fortuna’s Cayden Spiers placed first at 106 pounds, defeating Vanessa King of Hoopa in the final, with fellow Huskies Tyson Evanow (120), Mason Evanow (132), Jacob August (138) and Dailyn Wallace (195) each also placing first in their divisions.
At 113, Chase Bickmore placed first for the Crusaders, as did teammate Tyson Meyer at 145 and Kyler Smith at 220.
Eureka’s Knolin Calendar (285) and Del Norte’s Reynaldo Martinez (182) each also won their divisions.
A number of other local wrestlers also fared well, including Fortuna’s Jordan Jacobs (113), Del Norte’s Wyatt Sharp (120) and Aeneas Lopez (126), McKinleyville William Baumgarten (132) and Jace Thomson (152), Eureka’s Dylan McAllister (138), and St. Bernard’s John Kramer (160), Ronin Herbst (195) and Tucker Rice (285), all of whom placed second in their brackets.
Hoopa’s Riley Baldy (113), McKinleyville’s Brandon Hillegeist (126) and Damarius Thompson (132), Eureka’s Eain Clark (145) and Gianni Karl (170), and Del Norte’s Braydan Johnson (182) each placed third.
Several local teams will travel for the two-day Grants Pass tournament on Friday and Saturday.
