Corsairs battle back to beat Pasadena with huge second half

The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit on the way to a 70-58 win over Pasadena City College at the Santa Rosa tournament on Thursday.

The Corsairs, who improved to 15-1 with their eighth straight victory, outscored Pasadena 48-26 in the second half.

“Pasadena was the most stout defensive team we’ve played this year,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “They had nearly two weeks to prepare for us and it showed. They assessed superior tone in the first half.”

Trey Neff scored a team-high 22 points for CR, while Jeff Cheong finished with 20 points, including 19 in the second half to help set the tone in the comeback.

“Jett was mind-blowing in that second half,” said Bisio, who added “he entered a new phase of his artistry today.”

Jon Nchekwube also had 14 points in the win, while Pasadena scored just four points over the final eight minutes of the game.

“I’m so proud of the poise and confidence we displayed when we were down,” Bisio said. “It felt like the world was crashing down on us but we just kept playing on both sides of the ball.”

The Corsairs will continue tournament play against Yuba on Friday at 6 p.m.

The Redwoods women also played on Thursday night, falling to Moorpark College on the opening day of the Moorpark tournament.

The Corsair lost 92-51.

Rachel Valdez scored a team-high 18 points in the loss.

The Corsairs are now 4-8 and will continue tournament play on Friday against Irvine Valley at 2 p.m.
