Freshmen twin brothers Trey and Ty Neff exploded for 51 points on Friday night, as the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team knocked off a top-20 NorCal opponent for the second time in three days.

After getting the better of No. 5 Santa Rosa 66-60 on Wednesday night, the Corsairs traveled to Ukiah and beat Mendocino College 91-72.

The win lifts CR to 5-0 on the season.

Trey finished with a team-high 28 points and was an impressive 6-for-8 from 3-point range, while Ty added 23 points and nailed three of his four 3-point attempts.

The freshmen guards from Medford have impressed their new coach, who admits he wasn’t sure exactly what to think when they first joined the team.

“I may have misinterpreted their quietness early for lack of energy,” head coach Ryan Bisio admitted after the game. “But it became very clear it was razor-sharp focus.”

Ty and Trey were, according to Bisio, “ready to play in a tough road environment.”

And they weren’t the only ones.

Returning all-state center Jon Nchekwube also has been outstanding early in the season, particularly on the boards, and he finished with 13 points and 24 rebounds, while Jett Cheong added 15 points, including a pair of 3s.

“We competed tonight with a competitive edge,” Bisio said. “Mendo has some very dangerous pieces and they’re wonderfully coached. We adopted a survivalist mindset and were able to play very well in stretches.”

The Corsairs will try to make it six straight wins to start the season when they play at Solano on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
