The Fortuna Huskies continued their winning ways on the opening day at the Cloverdale softball tournament on Friday, defeating Clear Lake 5-2.
The Cardinals appeared to be in control of the game, with pitcher Liliana Cruz holding the Huskies bats hitless into the sixth inning, before Fortuna’s Kadence Mace broke up the no-hitter with a solid base hit.
The Clear Lake girls, however, still carried a two-run lead into the seventh, but the Huskies would rally late to keep their unbeaten start to the season in tact.
Kelsi Hall led off the inning with a base hit to kick start a late five-run rally, and pitcher Libby Johnston would make sure that was enough by holding the Cardinal bats scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.
Johnston pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing seven hits and four walks and striking out five.
Mace led the Huskies offensively and finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Johnston, Kylee Fennell and Zoe Dewberry rounded out a six-hit team performance.
Johnston, Dewberry, Mariah Smith, Mariah Bravo and Catherine Duncan each scored in the final inning.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 5-0.
