ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — A good week for the Loggers

By Ray Hamill — It’s been a good week for the Eureka Loggers, and that’s reflected in this week’s Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week and Team of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

The Loggers have begun the new softball season in style, racking up four wins in four games, with several players off to an impressive start.

No one more so than junior Kira Morris, who has been outstanding in the pitcher’s circle, posting three dominating wins.

And that gets her the nod for our athlete of the week this week.

Some of her fellow Loggers have also been impressing on the golf course, with the Eureka boys coming off a big week, including a great team performance in the latest round of H-DNL action at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course on Thursday.

The league leaders are our team of the week.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Kira Morris

Eureka Softball, Junior

Morris has been almost untouchable through the early going, and has begun the new season with three straight wins, all of them in dominating fashion.

The junior standout has struck out a remarkable 36 batters in 19 innings so far, while giving up just one hit and pitching two no-hitters.

On Wednesday she shut out the South Fork girls 10-0 in five innings, as the Loggers improved to 4-0 on the season.

If Morris continues to perform at this level, it will make it tough for the H-DNL bats when league play tolls around.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Eureka boys golf

The Loggers took over first place in the H-DNL team standings with a two-stroke win over Fortuna in the latest round of league action in Eureka on Thursday.

A young roster features four sophomores and two freshmen, but that hasn’t stopped them from competing with some of the best high school golfers in NorCal.

Earlier in the week, the Eureka boys placed fourth out of 13 teams at the Cougar Classic in Redding.

Under head coach Karen Griffith, the team of Jerome Lyons, Andrew Stewart, Nate Hill, Wyatt Zerlang, Julian Goodman and Talon Vigil continues to grow together and appears to be the team to beat in league play this season.
