By Ray Hamill — Kira Morris dominated in the pitcher’s circle and Kaitlin Giacone provided the offensive highlight of the day, as the Eureka Loggers continued their impressive start to the new softball season with a 10-0 win over South Fork in five innings in their home opener on Wednesday.
Morris has been untouchable so far this season and that continued to be the way on Wednesday as she held the Cubs bats hitless, while striking out 12 and not allowing any walks.
Through her three starts this season, the Eureka junior has struck out a remarkable 36 batters in 19 innings and has allowed just one base hit.
Only two defensive errors prevented her from a perfect game on Wednesday and neither of the South Fork baserunners got past first base.
Giacone, meanwhile, also continued to impress early in the season and finished 2-for-3 with a huge three-run home run in the bottom of the third.
The home run was a monster blast to left field that broke open a tight game and gave the Loggers a 4-0 advantage.
The hard-hitting sophomore standout also had a pair of stolen bases.
Claire Maples also continued to impress and finished 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases.
With the win, the Loggers improved to 4-0.
