By Ray Hamill — The Humboldt Crabs’ depth at the plate and on the mound was evident again at the Arcata Ball Park on Friday night, as they opened a three-game weekend series against Seals baseball with a 16-2 win.

Nine of the 10 players featured in the lineup hit successfully in a 20-hit team performance, as the home team pulled away with 10 runs in the seventh.

And that depth has impressed manager Robin Guiver this summer.

“We don’t really change no matter where we are in the lineup,” Guiver said. “We’ve got a pretty good chance to get a rally going whether it’s our 7-8-9 hitters coming up or 1-2-3.”

Dylan McPhillips had a big night at the plate, finishing 4-for-6, while Gabe Giosso remained red hot with three more hits.

Eureka’s Ethan Fischel also had three hits, including a pair of doubles.

The in-form Fischel now has a team-high 11 doubles on the summer, including a remarkable nine in his last five games.

The standout second baseman, who plays collegiately at Willamette, is now averaging an impressive .338 at the plate, fifth best on the team.

Kaden Riccomini pitched six innings for the win — his team-leading fourth win in four starts this summer — allowing just four hits.

“Kaden Riccomini has been pitching great for us every time he goes out,” Guiver said.

The Crabs (20-5) will continue their weekend series on Saturday night at 7 p.m., before concluding on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

And Guiver is hoping that regular Sunday starter Owen Stevenson will be fit to start on the mound for the series finale.

Big crowds at the games again this year.

Stevenson suffered a minor injury while lifting weights earlier in the week, but could be ready come game time.

“He threw a little bullpen (on Friday), and he felt good,” Guiver said.
