Fortuna girls beat Arcata to cap unbeaten season

The Fortuna girls closed out a perfect season in H-DNL basketball on Friday night, getting the better of Arcata 56-37 in both teams’ final game.

The defending Big 5 champions beat every other team in the H-DNL over the past three weeks to close out 8-0.

“We gelled quickly, and the girls just kind of came together,” head coach Scott Betts said. “We played great defense and rebounded really well the entire season, and that was our goal.”

This year’s team featured four seniors, each of whom was a part of the historic league winning team of a year ago, which claimed a first Big 5 championship for the program since the early 1980s.

And all four — Gracie Betts, Kendall Stewart, Saige Grundman and Gabby Chapman — helped set the tone for the team again this season and have an 11-1 record over the past two seasons in the Big 5.

Even without them, however, the Huskies should continue to be a force next season, with a talented junior class expected back.

Three of those juniors — Isobel Crosswhite, Teal Mostovoy and Gabby Stephens — are coming off outstanding campaigns.

“They lived up to expectations,” Scott Betts said of the trio.  “They played a huge role on our team this year.”

And that didn’t come as a surprise for the head coach, who has quickly built a dominating program in his two years with the team.

“Our JV team went undefeated in league last year, and so I knew I had three or four girls coming up.”

This year’s talented junior class also included Sophia Villalvazo and Briza Contreras.

Mostovoy grew stronger as the season progressed, finishing with a game-high 19 points in Friday’s win, while Crosswhite and Gracie Betts each chipped in 12 points.

Grace Talty had 11 points for Arcata, which closed out the season 4-2 overall and 1-2 against Big 5 teams.

Because of the shortened season, no league champions are being crowned this year.

All-league selections will be announced in the coming weeks.
