The Cubs and Warriors split a baseball doubleheader in Hoopa on Friday, with South Fork winning game one 22-0 in three innings and the home team winning the nightcap 7-2.
After dominating the opener and quickly pulling away for the win, the Cubs fielded mostly freshmen in game two.
“I thought that was a nice move by their coach,” Hoopa head coach John Snell said. “And our boys just caught fire for the first couple of innings.”
Jonathan Martinez pitched 6.2 innings for the win in game two after reaching his pitch count limit with two outs in the seventh.
Martinez struck out nine.
Teammate Ryan Ames was also instrumental in the win, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate and bringing some needed leadership at catcher after just joining up with the team on Thursday.
“I thought he really settled our team down,” said Snell, whose team is now 1-2. “He’s a solid catcher, a solid baseball player.”
Kagan Renteria finished 1-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs, while Daniel Minton was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
For South Fork (1-2), Graham McConnell got the win on the mound in game one, while Crue Contreras was 2-for-2 with a triple, a double and three RBIs.

Two freshmen — Justin Freitas and Broc Contreras — each also stood out with their play in game one, with Broc Contreras getting his first-ever high school hit in the win.
“Overall, in game one obviously we did a good job,” head coach Chris Contreras said. “And in the second game we fought hard.”
The Cubs feature a roster of 23 players this season with 20 of them on hand on Friday, all of whom got to play.
They started eight freshmen in game two.
“I was stoked with some of the freshmen,” the head coach said.
