By Ray Hamill — Just as H-DNL golf finally returned to the North Coast this past week, a number of former H-DNL golfers are getting set for their college seasons, which are about to resume in the coming weeks.

Most notably, former St. Bernard’s standout Allison Sobol, a four-time H-DNL champion who now plays at the University of Montana.

The Division-I Grizzlies are scheduled to begin the season at the Lady Thunderbird Invitational on March 11, with three tournaments scheduled for the spring.

The season is usually split between the fall and spring, with a winter break in between, but the Grizzlies have not competed as a team since last March because of the pandemic and played just once in 2020.

In four tournaments during the 2019/20 season, Sobol was third best on the team with a 79.51 average, with six of her 10 rounds in the 70s.

The 2018 St. Bernard’s graduate is a two-time Academic All-Big Sky Conference selection in her first two years at the school.

Also in action in the coming weeks are a pair of talented H-DNL golfers who battled each other for the league title as high school seniors in 2019.

Reigning H-DNL champion, Avary Henry of Arcata, is now playing for Aurora University, a Division-III school in Illinois.

Henry and her teammates are not currently scheduled to return until the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference championships in late April.

The college freshman, however, made an impressive debut back in September, shooting a round of 86 at the Judson University Fall Invite.

Also expected back competing soon is McKinleyville’s Phoebe Sundberg, who is one of four freshmen on a roster of 11 at Dominican University in San Rafael.

Sundberg, who placed third at the North Coast Section Division-II girls golf championships in 2019, has been back practicing with her teammates since mid-January.

The Division-II Penguins are scheduled to begin their season at Biola University in San Diego on Feb. 15.
