Competitive tennis returned to the North Coast on Saturday after a near year-long shutdown, and it was business as usual for the league favorites.
In one of four H-DNL matches held throughout the county, the Arcata boys defeated a tough Del Norte team, 5-1.
“It was fun,” Arcata head coach Onawa Gutierrez said of the return. “If anything they were just excited to be outside and playing in a sport we all love.”
The league will feature only singles matches for now, until the local counties reach the red COVID tier.
At No. 1 singles, Arcata’s Yasko Massias got the better of Del Norte’s Evan Drowns, 6-1, 6-0, while the Tigers also got wins from seniors Corbin Luoma, who defeated Philip Lor, 6-4, 6-2, and Austin Costello-Anderson, who defeated Jude Hayden, 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 2 singles, Del Norte’s Zach Lor got the better of Arcata’s Tristan Washington, 6-2, 6-4.
“They have some really good players,” Gutierrez said of the Warriors. “Their No. 1 and No. 2 are really strong players. And I think with a little more experience they’re going to have a great season.”
For Arcata, the experienced Massias, Washington, Luoma and Costello-Anderson are all seniors and in their fourth year with the team.
Gutierrez is also expecting some big things this season from her junior class, a group that includes Finn Murphy, Mathias Severn, Finn McRae and Aiden Waters.
On Saturday, Murphy defeated Leandro Aguilar, 6-0, 6-1, while Severn got the better Tyler Stanley, 6-1, 6-0.
Murphy joined the team last year, seeing limited action before the March shutdown.
“He came out last year for the first time and had a short introduction to tennis,” Gutierrez said. “We’re going to see really good things this season from him.”
Next up, Arcata plays at St. Bernard’s on Tuesday, while Del Norte hosts North Coast Prep.
Also in action on Tuesday, McKinleyville plays at Eureka and Fortuna plays at Ferndale.
