Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Student athletes from all across the H-DNL showed their support of the “Let Them Play” movement at a recent rally in Eureka.
By Ray Hamill — Local student athletes are being encouraged to lend their voices to the “Let Them Play CA” movement, as they step up their campaign to bring an immediate and full return to youth sports in the state.
“Let Them Play” advocates have been busy over the past few weeks as the grass roots movement continues to build momentum and pressure Governor Gavin Newsom.
In addition to a series of statewide rallies and an aggressive media campaign, “Let Them Play” organizers are now calling on the three million student athletes affected by the shutdown to let their voices be heard in a different way.
The movement is looking for the student athletes to pen letters to Governor Newsom which will be hand delivered to his office sometime next week.
“We want every kid to write a letter addressed to the governor expressing why they want sports back,” the movement’s Facebook page announced.
The letters can be emailed to letthemplayca@mail.com (note that it is @mail.com).
The Facebook announcement went on to suggest that the letters be typed and include the following …
“Name/Age/Sports you play … What you like about sports … How sports has helped you … What you miss about sports and … What negative impact not playing sports has had on you and your friends.”
The announcement also suggests ending the letter “with something like … Please Governor Newsom, Let Us Play.”
Organizers of the campaign are hoping for 10,000 letters.
