The Eureka girls appear to have found a spark on the soccer field at a very opportune time.

Since losing to Arcata 11 days ago, the program’s first league loss in more than two years, the Loggers have been playing with an added intensity and a collective chip on their shoulders, much to the delight of head coach Tommy Learmouth.

On Wednesday, an impressive Eureka got the better of South Fork 13-0 at Albee Stadium.

“I thought tonight was one of our best team performances in terms of playing together and moving as a unit,” the Eureka head head coach said. 

Klayre Barres scored five goals in the win, with Aquene Tollefson netting four times.

The Loggers also got goals from Marissa Hall, Liza Crassweller, Brinn Hales and starting goalie Kyra Watkins, who played up front for a spell.

“It was nice to see the level of intensity the ladies came out with tonight,” Learmouth said. “And the way they carried that intensity through the game.”

With the win, the Loggers improved to 6-1-1 in league play, and the performance will give them plenty of momentum heading into the stretch run as they compete for a third straight H-DNL crown.

“Maintaining the intensity for us tonight I thought was key to how the flow of the game went,” said Learmouth, who played everyone on his bench. “And every player coming in had that intensity and had that chip on their shoulder, and that hunger. And I love that hunger.”

Both the Cubs and Loggers will host homecoming games this weekend.

The South Fork girls play St. Bernard’s on Friday afternoon, while the Eureka girls play Del Norte on Saturday at 1 p.m.
