The South Fork Cubs have made a habit of playing Big 5 schools close in boys soccer this year, and that continued to be the case at a muddy Albee Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Eureka boys, however, rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two second-half goals to pull out a 3-2 win.
The win ends a two-game losing streak for the home team.
“It’s important to get back to winning ways,” said Eureka head coach Eddie Garcia, whose team is now 4-4 in league play.
Left back Joshua Manson led the way for the Loggers, assisting on the winning goal to cap a standout day for junior.
“He played a really good game,” Garcia said.
Kai Gallegos gave the home team the lead early in the game before the visitors tied things up on the first of two Tanner Curran goals to leave the teams all square at the interval.
Ethan Kulchin set up Curran’s second strike to give the visitors a one-goal advantage early in the second half, before goals by Luis Romero and Ryan Diarte secured the come-from-behind win for the Loggers.
The field conditions played a part.
“It was just really hard to get anything going when the field is as muddy as it is,” Garcia said. “Not to take anything from them, they played well.”
For the Cubs, it felt like one that got away.
An impressive South Fork team has played every Big 5 school except for Fortuna extremely close this season, including tying McKinleyville.
For any South Fork team to walk away from Albee Stadium with even a 3-2 loss, that’s an impressive showing.
“We played really well,” South Fork head coach Kelly Paine said. “We’re just bummed we didn’t walk away with the win. But we played better than they did, I thought.”
Tyler Bates added an assist for the Cubs, while defensively Sterling York and Jayden Paine continued to set the tone.
“Really that whole defensive line again played well,” Kelly Paine said. “Sterling really played well.”
Gallegos also had an assist for the Loggers, while a change at the back appeared to work out just fine, with Vic Vang and Jacob Alston setting the tone in the center of defense.
“We had to switch some things around,” Garcia said. “And they both held it down really well.”
The Loggers play a homecoming game against Del Norte on Saturday at 11 a.m., while the Cubs will host St. Bernard’s in their homecoming game on Friday afternoon.
