The hottest team in the H-DNL will carry plenty of momentum into this year’s Charles Lakin Tournament.
On Wednesday the Eureka Loggers stretched their winning streak to seven straight in baseball with a 4-0 win at Del Norte to close out their Big 5 schedule.
The shutout was the second straight for the Eureka boys, who have been unstoppable since dropping both games of a doubleheader to Big 5 champs McKinleyville in mid April.
During that run, the Loggers have outscored their opponents 64-12 and have not given up more than four runs in any game.
Unfortunately for the Loggers, however, it wasn’t quite enough to secure a share of this year’s Big 5 championship, which McKinleyville secured outright with a come-form-behind win over rival Arcata on Wednesday.
“We did what we could control, so I was happy with that,” Eureka head coach Tommy Gale said after Wednesday’s win.
The Loggers appeared up for the task and started fast, taking a three-run lead in the top of the first and stretching the advantage to four the following inning.
And that would prove to be more than enough thanks to some strong pitching and defense, as Eureka held the Warriors to a second straight shutout, their only shutouts of the year.
“We came out hot and that was wonderful,” Gale said. “I was a little disappointed we put up a bunch of zeroes after that. We like to keep the pedal down.”
Ty Crawford and Ryder Mitchell combined for the shutout on the mound, holding the home team to just four hits on the day.
With just one game in 13 days, Gale opted to give both pitchers some work.
Crawford got the start and posted the win, pitching three innings and allowing two hits and no walks while striking out four.
Mitchell threw the final four innings, giving up just two hits and one walk and striking out six.
Mitchell also had a key base hit, finishing 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while the always impressive Bryson Burns finished 2-for-4 with a run to lead a six-hit team performance.
Garrett Levitt (1-for-2 with a walk and a run) also had a double, while Crawford (1-for-4 with an RBI) and Matt Pleasant (1-for-3) each also had a base hit in the win.
No stats were immediately available for the Warriors, who finished 6-6 in conference and are now 12-12 overall.
The Loggers received the conference’s No. 2 seed for next week’s Charles Lakin Tournament, while the Warriors will be seeded No. 3.
Both schools open tournament play at the Arcata Ball Park on Tuesday.
