Crabs hold players meeting as they look to find a way to end slump

The comforts of home didn’t help matters for the Humboldt Crabs on Tuesday night as they lost a sixth consecutive game.

After losing all five games on a road trip last week, the Crabs returned to the Arcata Ball Park to open a five-game series against the West Coast Kings and fell 7-2.

The win for the Kings was just their second in nine games as they improved to 9-12 in league and 18-16 overall.

A normally explosive Crabs offense was held to just three hits in the loss and didn’t get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth inning.

The loss drops the Crabs to 27-10 on the season and 11-9 in the Pacific Empire League and saw them fall to fourth in the standings.

“It’s been a little bit of a challenge to put everything together,” Crabs manager Jeff Giacomini said. “Our offense is very explosive and when we do give up a few runs we need to answer back and we haven’t done a good job responding.”

The players held a team meeting on Tuesday night, and Giacomini is confident they can turn things around for the stretch run of the season.

“Every team goes through this and I have no doubt we can pick things up,” Giacomini said. “I still believe in my team. I think we’ve got a good group of guys and they know what they need to do.”

The Crabs will try to get back to winning ways when they play a doubleheader against the Kings on Wednesday night.

Game one is set for 5:30 p.m. and Giacomini will start a pair of local lefties on the hill, with Myles Standish getting the nod for the opener and Jackson Kelly starting game two.

“We’ve got to get back in the win column, and it starts tonight,” Giacomini said.
