The Humboldt Eagles appear poised to make some noise in the state playoffs this summer after a good weekend for both club teams.

Hosting their annual tournament in Eureka, the Eagles 17Us and 19Us both reached their respective tourney finals on Sunday, with the younger players taking the championship with a 9-4 win over the Susanville Renegades.

Kyle Giacone capped a big few days in tournament play with another impressive performance, striking out 14 Susanville batters and hitting an RBI triple to help kickstart a third-inning rally after a slow start for the team.

“I was really impressed with the players,” Eagles manager TJ Brogan said. “Again, we kept the errors down and we kept the hits up. They kept that same attitude (all tournament). They never gave up.”

With Sunday’s win, the Eagles 17Us stretched their winning streak to seven straight, as they close out tournament play 5-0 and improved to 14-8 on the season.

The Eagles 19Us also reached their championship game on Sunday, but suffered a first tournament loss, falling 8-1 to the Colts A, a team the Eagles had beaten earlier in tournament play.

“We just ran into a good pitcher today,” Eagles manager Scott St. John said. “He threw well.”

Despite the loss, the Eagles will carry plenty of momentum into their upcoming state playoffs after winning 11 of their last 14 games.

Three players had multiple hits in the Eagles 17Us win, including Giacone, who finished 2-for-3 with the triple and three RBIs.

Bryce Pope (2-for-4 with a double) and Brayden Bermers (2-for-3 with two RBIs) each also impressed.

Giacone got the start on the mound and threw 5.2 innings, giving up three runs, none of which were earned, walking two and striking out 14.

“It was another elite performance out of him,” Brogan said. 

Bryson Burns threw the final 1.1 innings to help see his team over the finish line, giving up one earned run and striking out two.

Wyatt Zeller (1-for-3 with an RBI), Brice Neuman (1-for-4), Lucas Ask (1-for-4) and Scotty Brogan (RBI) each also made some noise at the plate.

The Eagles 17Us will host the Wild Cactus on Friday before playing a doubleheader against the Show out of Redding on Saturday.

They then open the state playoffs on July 22.

Several of the Eagles 19Us also impressed in their championship showdown on Sunday, including the ever-reliable Garrett Levitt, who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Rhythm Green also was 2-for-2, but the Eagles were held to just six hits.

Joe Tanno got the start on the mound and threw four solid innings, giving up just two hits.

However, Tanno and relief pitcher Green combined to walk nine Colts batters, and that has been a concern for this team for much of the summer.

“We had a few walks, and that’s kind of been our achilles heel, honestly for most of the season,” St. John said. “And eventually that will catch up to you.”

The highlight play of the weekend for the Eagles was a monster home run by Tate Saso in Saturday’s 5-0 win over the Colts B team.

“Tate Saso hit an absolute bomb that hit the roof of the building across the street,” St. John said. “He cleared the street, and that kind of woke us up.”

Just one run separated the two clubs going into the seventh, but Saso’s bomb kickstarted a four-run inning for the Eagles.

Green also had a key base hit while Parker Prior laid down a “really good” bunt, according to his coach, to score two runs in the seventh.

Lyle McKinnon got the start on the mound and threw five good innings for the win, giving up just three hits and three walks and striking out four.

Prior took over in the sixth with no outs and a pair of runners on and got out of the jam with three outs on three pitches, including turning a double play with catcher Jake Brunner.

The Eagles will now head to Fairfield for the Area tournament, opening against Napa Valley on Wednesday.

The top two teams at the 10-team tournament will advance to the state tournament.
