College-bound Panthers to help at McKinleyville basketball camp

Some of the best basketball coaches and players on the North Coast will be on hand at next week’s Mack Hoops Summer Camp.

Organized by McKinleyville boys head coach Chris Davis, who led the Panthers to a first-ever outright Big 5 championship last winter, the camp will run for four days at McKinleyville High School, beginning on Monday.

The camp is open to players aged 7 to recently graduated eighth graders and runs daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Davis and fellow camp director Harlan LeRoux have recruited some of the best basketball coaches in the area for the camp, including College of the Redwoods coaches Justin Claus and Bree Northern, as well as Issac Gildea.

Several former Panthers will also be on hand to help out, including recently graduated Bode Douglass, Henry Turner IV and Neil Moon, each of whom is set to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level.

Turner, who was named MVP of the Big 5 last season, will play at Sacramento City College, while Moon will join Claus at CR and Douglass will head to Ukiah to play for Mendocino College.

Two other former Panthers — Jack Clancy (CR) and Nick Maher (Hartnell College) — will also lend their expertise to help out the young campers, as will their former McKinleyville teammate, Cody Whitmer, who will be a guest coach.

After a couple of impressive seasons at CR, Whitmer recently announced that he will be continuing his playing career at The Evergreen State College in Washington.
