Local All-Star teams to open Section tournaments this weekend

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Redwood Empires’ Liam Kilgore celebrates a grand slam in the championship game of this year’s District 26 All-Star tournament.

By Ray Hamill — Get ready for a busy weekend for the local Little League All-Star teams.

Three District 26 championship teams will try to keep their seasons going at their respective Section tournaments, all of which get under way over the next two days.

And that includes a pair of Redwood Empire Little League teams.

It’s been a good summer so far for RELL, which claimed championships at the District Tournament of Champions as well as taking home the winning banners in the county 11-year-old and 12-year-old All-Star tournaments.

The RELL 11s will open their Section tournament in Chico in Friday, with their first game set for 5:30 p.m.

The RELL 12s will also travel for their Section tournament.

The District 26 champs will head to Colusa and will open against Chico Central, also on Friday at 6 p.m.

And it likely will be a tough opener for the Humboldt County team, with Chico Central winning their Section tournament as 10s and 11s the past two summers.

But after winning all four of their games at last month’s District tournament by a combined score of 54-2, the RELL players look well up for the challenge.

The third District 26 championship team in action this weekend is the Eel River 10-year-olds.

The young Eel River players will travel to Lake County for their Section tournament, opening on Thursday night against Westside Chico.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

A fourth District 26 championship team was also in action earlier this week.

The McKinleyville Junior All-Stars, who won both the District and Section championships, played in the NorCal State Tournament at Turlock but lost back-to-back games on Sunday and Monday to close out a memorable summer season.
