On Friday evening the Humboldt Eagles 17Us were involved in a one-run game for the second time this week.

But this one went their way.

In an all-local matchup, the Eagles held on to edge the Southern Humboldt 76ers 7-6 as an exciting start to the local American Legion baseball season continued.

All four of this week’s games involving local Legion teams were decided by the narrowest of margins, including a pair of one-run victories for the Northern Humboldt Giants over the Eagles and 76ers and an Eagles 19U game against the Crabs.

On Friday, the young Eagles played with a shorthanded roster that was missing a pair of influential players, Kyle Giacone and Brayden Bermers.

But they found a way to win despite that.

“It was next and neck the entire game,” Eagles head coach TJ Brogan said. “Some errors were made on both ends, but I was very proud our guys were able to keep up with the 76ers and sneak out with a win. It was a good game overall.”

Scotty Brogan had a big game in the win.

The Eureka sophomore got the start on the mound and pitched three strong innings for the win, allowing just one earned run on two hits and striking out four.

The young Brogan also had a good day at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Wyatt Zeller also impressed for the Eagles and went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, while Ty Wade and Aedean Henderson each finished 2-for-3.

Zeller pitched two innings in relief, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out three, with Bryce Pope pitching one inning after that and striking out three.

Henderson took the mound for the final inning and got the save, allowing two earned runs on four hits.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 1-1.

No stats or details were available for the 76ers.

Next up, the Eagles will make the short trip to play the Northern Humboldt Giants at Arcata High on Tuesday evening with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m.
