One day after suffering a loss at Hoopa, the South Fork Cubs responded with a shutout victory over the Warriors in Little 4 baseball on Friday afternoon, winning 10-0 in five innings in Miranda.
Senior team leader Travis “T-Bone” Way led the way at the plate and on the mound.
The team captain not only got the win on the hill with five scoreless innings but also hit his first home run of the season, a walk-off blast that ended the game early on the 10-run rule.
“From the get, the boys came to play,” South Fork head coach Andrew Jacobson said. “The energy from our dugout was absolutely incredible and we responded well.”
Way finished 2-for-3 at the plate with the two-run home run, two RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases.
“It was a great moment for Way and the Cubs,” said Jacobson, who added that the senior “threw an excellent game.”
Way gave up just two hits and struck out nine.
“We played excellent defense behind him and it was a great day in the field as a whole,” the coach added. “Everybody made plays and everybody did their job.”
The win lifted the Cubs to 3-5 in the Little 4 (7-12 overall) and moved them two wins clear of fourth-placed Hoopa (1-7 and 5-10).
It also helps them in the race for third and the conference’s final Charles Lakin Tournament spot.
Several other players also stepped up in the win, including freshman Ryan Tosten, who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
“(Tosten) had a great game,” Jacobson said. “He made solid contact all game.”
Another freshman, Tyson Mulder, also impressed, finishing 1-for-1 with two walks, as did sophomore Kael Puno, who finished 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
Dorje Johnston also made some noise at the plate and was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk, while the always dangerous Mason Bell finished 1-for-3 with a double, a run and a walk.
Shayne Casey rounded out a good day for the home team at the plate and was 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and two runs.
Hoopa dropped to 1-7 in the Little 4 and 5-10 overall.
