Pitchers Isabel Sanchez of Fortuna and Mackenzie Wolff of Eureka combined to strike out 25 on Wednesday in yet another competitive and highly-entertaining Big 5 softball game.
The two schools faced off at Fortuna, with the visitors sneaking a 2-1 win and taking the conference series against the Huskies, whom they split a doubleheader with earlier in the month.
And both pitchers came ready to go, with Sanchez striking out 17 and Wolff eight on her return from injury.
With the win, the Eureka girls improved to 4-4 in conference play (7-10 overall) as they ended a three-game losing streak, while the Huskies saw a three-game winning streak end as they dropped to 4-3 in the Big 5 and 15-3 overall.
The Fortuna girls will likely be glad to not face the Loggers for the remainder of the regular season, with two of their three losses this spring coming against their Big 5 rivals.
Wollf, who missed a pair of games against Del Norte on Saturday — both of which the Loggers lost — returned to the circle on Wednesday and held a dangerous and deep Fortuna lineup scoreless until the seventh inning with the help of some strong defense.
The Eureka junior gave up just six hits and one walk.
And she got just enough run support, with the visitors scoring a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings to open up a two-run lead.
The Secor sisters played a key role in the win, with Megan Secor driving in Macy for the opening run of the game.
The Loggers would add to their lead with a necessary run two innings later, when Tiffany Harris made it three consecutive base hits for her team on her way to driving in Bailey Brown for what would prove to be the winning run.
Sanchez continued her dominating spring and deserved better after another stellar performance.
In addition to her 17 strikeouts, the Fortuna senior gave up just five hits and no walks.
She also finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Evalynn Little, Hailee Thompson, Sophia Castillo and Sephora Machado each also had a base hit for the home team.
Macy Secor led Eureka at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, with Megan Secor, Harris and Brown each adding a hit to round out a five-hit team performance.
Next up, on Saturday the Loggers travel to play a doubleheader at Arcata, while the Huskies will try to get back on track and keep their championship hopes alive when they host conference leaders McKinleyville in a doubleheader.
Both doubleheaders get under way at 11 a.m.
